Best Long Range Rifle Scopes

The question of what makes the best long range rifle scope can be rather subjective at times, particularly since the answer is a complicated array factoring in cost, end use, what the user expects out of performance and many other things.  Given this, we have undertaken to provide some of the best rifle scope reviews available in the hopes of letting you, the shooter and consumer make an informed decision.  Right now, I am staring at my latest scoped creation, an 1896 Krag Jorgensen cavalry carbine that is sadly far from original.  By the time it fell into my hands, it had been modified sometime before WWII and drilled and tapped for two different scope mounts. Accepting that it would never get fully restored due to the holes, I decided to make it into a scoped deer rifle and found myself asking what the best sniper scope for it was.  The scope I settled on will be reviewed below, but my particular thought process involved finding the best combination of price and performance with a name I trusted, and that would be suitable for both the cartridge in question and hunting in the Western Washington woods. A secondary consideration was being able to move it onto a .22 target rifle if I decided I didn’t like it on the Krag, so I was actually shopping with two different guns in mind. I found the best long range scope for my uses, and will help you do the same.

Barska Illuminated Reticle Scope

Barska-4x32-IR-Contour-RiflescopeThis is another nice little scope, and probably the best rifle scope if you want a budget friendly compact infrared scope.  I’m toying with getting one for my AR 15 because it is really a nicely regarded little unit. It wasn’t all that long ago that scopes with illuminated reticles were in the realm of big money scopes, and the average shooter on a budget just couldn’t justify one. Fortunately, those days have passed, and the market is awash in illuminated scopes in all price ranges.  Of course, some are junk, but unless you depend on your rifle to keep you or somebody else alive, the Barska will serve you quite nicely.  Of course it does have some shortcomings, it’s a compact scope. That means you are going to have a shorter eye relief and need to have the scope closer to your eye, and so may not want to use this on heavy recoiling rifles anyway.  Personally I’d run with it for an AR or AK, handguns, or any sort of rimfire. From the looks of things, it would be great for coyote hunting, as the illuminated reticle will let you get on target in low light conditions, and we all know you find your game just when the light is failing! Either way, this is a great entry level illuminated reticle scope that will do its job if you don’t try to push it to an extreme it’s not meant for.

Leupold VX-R Patrol FireDot

Leupold-113769-VX-RThis is one of those scopes I wish I could afford. Then I wish I could afford a rifle worthy of such a scope. However, since a man can dream, we can take a closer look at one of the best rifle scopes for any money I’ve ever seen. First off it’s a Leupold, which means it is one of the best rifle scopes made anywhere period, end of story. There might be better, but they would be spoken of in the same breath as a custom one of a kind rifle. So for the mere mortal who doesn’t own a private island, you just won’t get any better than this.  And it’s got an illuminated reticle to boot, making it ideal for low light or poor weather conditions. This is a scope you take hunting or take to war. If you are hunting in the true wilderness or have to use your rifle to keep yourself alive, this is the optic for you. Of course, there are always downsides, most of which, in this case, revolve around cost.  This is not a cheap one, or even something most people can casually decide to buy without a second thought. In fact, it costs as much as some decent rifles. But, there is no denying the value and reliability you get with the Leupold name. It is one of the best sniper scopes in the market.

Simmons 8-Point Truplex Reticle, 3-9x50mm

Simmons-8-Point-Truplex-Reticle-Riflescope,-3-9x50mm-(Matte)This is the scope I wound up buying recently for my Krag.  I knew I wanted a scope that had a low magnification… after all I’m shooting deer, not fighting a war, and it had to have a 30mm or so  front objective lens to fit the mount I was using. I was willing to pay more, but since I had not yet had a chance to shoot my rifle and was considering putting this on a .22 if things didn’t work out well, I decided to keep it under a hundred bucks.  Now I confess, this isn’t my first dance with the Simmons 8 Point scopes, I’d had one once before on a .22 target rifle and found it was extremely well suited for the job. Ultimately the Simmons 8 Point has proven to be what I wanted it to be. A functional, accurate scope. The main downsides I can find with it are the somewhat weak construction in the focusing ring. The first one I owned broke and turned out to be made of cheap plastic. A trip back to Simmons resulted in it being repaired and it continued to function just fine afterward. I have not had that problem on my second scope and hope it was just a freakish isolated incident. I will happily recommend this scope to anyone who needs an affordable, yet accurate riflescope. It does the job, and I’ve used one to break many a  shotgun shell at a hundred yards from my .22 and hopefully will take a deer with it this fall.

VORTEX Viper 6.5-20×50 PA Riflescope

VORTEX Viper 6.5-20x50 PA Riflescope, Mil Dot Reticle, Matte Black (VPR-M-06MD)Buying this scope signaled one of those occasions when I decided to go a little bit beyond the price range of good scopes, but good scopes that come at a budget price. Any scope with light transmission of 90 percent and above is worth taking notice of and this Vortex Viper offers an impressive 95% light transmission. I would naturally expect a $400-$600 scope to boast features such as anti-reflective finishing because of its matte black coating, but when this comes together with great image sharpness and clarity, and long turrets for easy adjustments, you start to realize just why this scope was built for sighting a rifle to be used in long range hunting excursions. The ability to easily make range estimations is very important to me, which is easily achievable with the mil dot reticle featured. This is exactly why this scope is great for long distance hunting and shooting as it offers a great range of accurate sighting. More experienced long range hunters will particularly appreciate the implications of being able to accurately calculate any bullet holdover and required windage, both of which come back down to the mil dot reticle. Durability is another feature you’d expect of a $400+ rifle scope, which I’d say is suitably accounted for through this scope’s one-piece body design and that also makes it very easy to store and handle. I wouldn’t expect too much trouble with the recoil concerned with long range hunting, but that’s a complete non-factor with this Vortex. Definitely a match made in heaven for my 111 7mm Savage Trophy Hunter Rem Mag rifle, with easy parallax correction achieved with a convenient side-knob. In the hands of a competitive shooter who knows exactly what he’s doing, 1000 yards is an achievable shooting distance with this true long-range rifle scope.

Nikon ProStaff Black Matte Rifle Scope

Nikon-ProStaff-4-12-x-40-Black-Matte-RiflescopeNikon makes one of the best long range rifle scopes right now. The ProStaff is a great four to twelve power scope that has a nice 40mm objective lens and can really reach out and touch something. Lots of scopes have a 30mm objective lens, but a bigger lens means more light gathering, which means a clearer, brighter sight picture. Really, the ProStaff is a compromise between the standard 30mm objective lens and a bigger 50 or even 60mm objective lens. Bigger objective lenses mean you often need to mount the scope higher up off the rifle than normal, and must use non-standard rings. Additionally some rifles just aren’t’ well suited for a really big objective lens, so running with a 40mm lens gives you a balance between too big, and too small. With that in mind, Nikon is a long trusted name and make some of the best rifle scopes on the market right now. It is hard to find something wrong with this scope unless you need or want a much larger objective lens or even higher magnification. But for most long range or target shooters, a 40mm objective lens and up to twelve power magnification will do pretty much anything you want. Stick this scope on a bench rest 5.56 or .308 rifle, and you’ll be making tiny little groups and long distances in no time flat. The only real shortcomings, if you can call them that, is the lack of extremes on this scope. It’s not a 25 power scope, and it doesn’t have an objective lens big enough to drive the Titanic through. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic scope at a fantastic price.

Important Features of Long-Range Rifle Scopes

Your final buying decision in settling for a long range rifle scope should not be completely based on the scope manufacturer’s own list of highlighted features. I mean sure, no manufacturer will pass up on the opportunity to sell their product, no matter how good or not-so-good it may have ultimately turned out to be and they usually do this by diverting attention away from the product’s shortcomings, choosing rather to have you focus on seemingly important features you may not be particularly looking for. Your ability to separate the important stuff from the bells and whistles will ultimately determine the quality of your user experience though. At the end of the day, you want a long range rifle scope for a specific purpose and that’s where you should kick-start your feature-comparison focus.

The end-user quality you’ll ultimately extract out of the use of your rifle scope broadly falls into four features to assess. These include the quality of the optics featured in the scope, the magnification range offered by the scope, the reticle and the elevation adjustment available.

Quality of the Featured Optics

The optic quality of a rifle scope is something totally different from what manufacturers are quick to label “quality scopes.” This is because they’re mostly implying that the overall device is of high quality, which in any case is up to you to decide, based on what you want to get out of the scope you buy. When we specifically speak about the quality of the optics used however, this refers to the amount of light which the optic allows to pass through it. I always like to get a good feel for the optic quality of a scope by picking it up and looking through it, especially if I can compare it with a number of other scopes in this way. You can immediately see the difference between a standard-quality scope optic and one of higher quality by looking through them, but if you have to base your decision solely on what the manufacturer specifies, generally a scope lens which allows more light to pass through it is of higher quality. It’s all about the clarity of the image (target) achieved because all you want is to be able to see it properly under your typical and dynamically changing shooting conditions.Best Rifle Scope Reviews

Magnification Range

Magnification range is more important than the maximum range the scope offered, simply because during practical hunting excursions, you won’t always be sighting a target that’s far away. You don’t want the target to suddenly become less visible or blurred when it’s much closer to you, so great magnification range of between 5x and 25x is an important feature of a good long range rifle scope.

You’ll have to use your discretion as far as the reticle goes, because it ultimately comes down to which pattern you’re most comfortable with and which pattern delivers the best performance and accuracy for you. That said however, many experienced hunters who specialize in long-range shooting have a preference for Mildot reticles or floating crosshairs. It’s all about turret adjustment when it comes to long range hunting, particularly in the sense that you have to be able to calculate how far to adjust the turrets to coincide with the accuracy of the reticle’s bulls-eye position, maintaining your accuracy even when you often have to estimate the distance between you and your target and make windage and elvation adjustments accordingly. Hash-marked reticles or those featuring equally spaced out dots probably signal the mark of a good long range rifle scope.

Best Rifle Scope ReviewsElevation Adjustment

The offered MOA adjustment of a good long range rifle scope is also dictated to by typical hunting or shooting conditions, particularly with regards to the varying range of the distance you’ll be shooting over. I’d advise you to go for a scope that allows 100 MOA (or 27.3 mil) of elevation adjustment, at the very least. The idea is for the offered adjustment elevation to cover typical environments you’ll constantly find yourself in, so something like an adjustment of 50 MOA will have you regretting why you bought your expensive scope when your immediate need is to account for ballistics pointing at up to 55 MOA.

Any features beyond the mentioned four can be considered as a bonus, but these would probably include specs like 0.25 MOA (1/4) adjustment over 0.125 MOA (1/8), and NOT something like an illuminated reticles because that’s irrelevant for long distance hunting.

What Exactly Is the Best Long Range Scope Then?

Hopefully, we helped answer that question for you. But the final answer really is the one you buy for yourself. No scope is perfect, instead, they are a series of compromises designed to deliver a functional product for a particular market.  Consider your final use. Are you punching paper with a low recoiling rifle in nice weather? Then the best rifle scope for you is entirely different from someone hunting bear in Alaska, and a police marksman will need yet a different scope altogether. However, you should always make sure your scope is purged with a neutral gas and sealed to prevent fogging, it should be shockproof so you can use it with most rifle calibers, and it should have fully coated optics to ensure optimal light transmission.

Larger objective lenses will give you more light, but take up space on your rifle. High magnification scopes may make for a jumpy image that is hard to focus on while too little magnification can make it hard to see your target at great distance.

An illuminated reticle is nice if you are hunting and want to make the best of whatever light conditions you have, but many people who use their rifles only in ideal settings have no need for them.

As hunters, we all like to using different weapons. Crossbows are one of the best hunting tools in our arsenal. If you still don’t have one, you may check ArchersCafe as one of the best resources online. As crossbow, the scope is something you should only have to buy once, sight in and not have to worry about again. When making that sort of important investment, get the best long range rifle scope for the money that you can…

How to Choose a Rifle Scope – Buying Guide

First, let’s look at what you are using the scope for. There are many different scopes to use on varying scenarios such as hunting and tactical. Base your research off these two so you get a better understanding on which one is right for you. Next is the price and a lot of the rifle scopes listed above are under $200. Other scopes range around $1,000 or more, but if you buy one of these scopes, you won’t sacrifice any quality. If you do pick a cheaper scope you’ll most likely run into problems that could have been avoided. If you are focusing on having a tactical advantage, then the magnification, the quality of the lens and zeroing mechanisms are very important aspects. If a target is blurry, then you risk missing or worse. If a scope is hard to zero, then the accuracy will suffer as a result. Make sure you get a scope with quality lens that are reliable, this will ensure you’ll be able to see your target. The Nikon brand has a great line up of affordable scopes tBest Rifle Scope Reviewshat will guarantee the quality of the lens.

If you intend to use the scope in harsh weather, or you’re worried it will get foggy, then what you need to look for is a nitrogen purged scope. This will make it practically water-proof and fog-proof.

Do you like shooting with one shot at a time, or do you like firing constantly? If you like shooting but you’re afraid of the continuous recoil, then a scope with generous eye relief and a well built structure is key. You can get the most of the scope in a tactical setting by using the eye relief to its full extent, this will allow for rapid target acquisition. A sleek design can make it easier to use and less likely to be seen. Providing the best possible shot by using hash marks makes hunting game a breeze. Some scopes are best suited to specific bullets and the like. To make sure that your scope and rifle are the best they can be, utilize these data points in your research. Use reviews rather than ads or descriptions, they would reliable information that will only benefit you.

Here’s a video to give you a visual idea of how to choose a rifle scope:

What Are The Types Of Rifle Scopes?

Rifle scopes will always differ depending on what kind of scope you get. A red dot reticle allows one to see an illuminated on top of the picture that is shown. Do not mistake this with a laser sigh, the illuminated reticle is not projected on the game itself. A laser sight projects a beam onto the target, this is useful for short range targets and gives a tactical edge.

Another point to consider is at the Focal Plane. Using a Second Focal Plane, the reticle stays the same when zoomed; this kind of scope is commonly used. Another type of scope is a First Focal Plane, the big difference when using this is that the reticle is zoomed in with the image. The advantage of using a First Focal Plane scope is fairly simple. The reticle is enlarged when zoomed in relation to the magnification. This allows for accurate shots in most ranges. The Second Focal Plane stays the same when zoomed, which allows for a further magnification.

Power and magnification of the scope should also be considered. Most scopes use a varying magnification that is adjustable to the needs of the shooter but there are fixed scopes. When using a fixed scope the magnification will always stay the same. The magnification level can be assessed using numbers like 3x. The 3x means that the image you see through the scope will be three times bigger than compared to just using your eyes. The power of the scope is determined based on the preferred hunting grounds. In a forest, you don’t need a very powerful scope as opposed to an open plain.

4 Main Scopes

Compact rifle scope, sniper, laser rangefinder rifle scope and the pistol scope. The compact is just as it seems, a rifle scope that is lightweight and smaller than a standard scope.
